The Tamil Nadu government has given the nod for the construction and upgradation of mortuaries in 10 government hospitals and government medical college hospitals across the State. Funds to the tune of ₹8.85 crore were sanctioned for the works.
According to an order issued recently, the Government of India had approved ₹16.2 crore, under the National Health Mission (NHM) Record of Proceedings 2024-2026, for strengthening mortuaries in government medical college hospitals and government hospitals in the State. This was also approved by the 46th Executive Committee of the State Health Society, Tamil Nadu.
Based on this, the Mission Director, NHM-Tamil Nadu, sent proposals to strengthen the mortuaries at the following institutions — Government Headquarters Hospital, Pennagaram, Dharmapuri; Government Headquarters Hospital, Gudalur, the Nilgiris; Government Hospital, Arakkonam, Vellore; Government Erode Medical College and Hospital; Government Medical College and Hospital, Villupuram; Government Medical College Hospital, Thoothukudi; Government Medical College Hospital, Tirunelveli; Government Raja Mirasdar Hospital, Government Medical College, Thanjavur; Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, Tiruchi; and Government Hospital, Srivaikundam, Thoothukudi.
Accordingly, ₹65 lakh to ₹70 lakh each were allotted for government hospitals and headquarters hospitals and ₹90 lakh to ₹1.50 crore each were allotted for government medical college hospitals.
