Published - November 06, 2026 09:10 pm IST A 60-year-old woman and her critically ill son were forced to take shelter at a local graveyard (Vaikunta Dhamam) in Vemulawada after their house owner allegedly asked them to vacate their rented accommodation, leaving them without shelter, on Thursday. According to sources, the woman, a native of Kistampet village in Chandurthi mandal, had been living in a rented house in the temple town with her 38-year-old son for the past couple of months. Her son is reportedly suffering from a serious health condition. As his health condition deteriorated, a local doctor referred him to a hospital in Sircilla on Thursday for better treatment. Meanwhile, the landlord allegedly asked the mother and son to vacate the house. With nowhere else to go, the woman reportedly took shelter at the Vaikunta Dhamam premises along with her ailing son on Friday morning. On learning about their situation, Vemulawada Municipal Chairman Pulkam Raju visited the duo and arranged for their transportation in a 108 ambulance to the Government Area Hospital in Sircilla. Updated - November 06, 2026 09:06 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA The Health and Medical Department has made extensive arrangements to safeguard pregnant women, mothers and newborn babies in view of successive cyclones affecting Andhra Pradesh. A statement issued by the department on Friday said pregnant women nearing their expected delivery dates had been identified and shifted to hospitals in advance to avoid transportation difficulties during the cyclones. Of the 6,166 pregnant women shifted to hospitals in areas affected by Cyclones Murasu and Arnab, 2,924 (47.42%) have delivered so far. Field-level medical staff identified the women based on departmental records and shifted them to nearby hospitals to ensure timely medical care. A total of 3,066 pregnant women were shifted to hospitals in the 13 districts affected by Cyclone Murasu. Of them, 1,705 (55.61%) have delivered. Chittoor, Nellore and East Godavari districts recorded the highest number of deliveries. In the 20 districts affected by Cyclone Arnab, 3,100 pregnant women were shifted to hospitals, of whom 1,219 (39.32%) have delivered. Officials identified women whose expected delivery dates fell between October 25 and November 8 and ensured that they received the necessary medical care. Visakhapatnam recorded the highest number of deliveries at 124, followed by Kakinada (110), Manyam (108) and NTR district (106). Special attention was given to high-risk pregnancies, women suffering from severe anaemia and those carrying twins. They were shifted under medical supervision to nearby Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres, area hospitals, district hospitals and government general hospitals. The department deployed 108 ambulances, Thalli Bidda Express vehicles and other transport arranged by medical officers. Private vehicles were also pressed into service wherever necessary. Arrangements were also made to shift 550 pregnant women scheduled to deliver at private hospitals to the respective facilities. A normal delivery was conducted at the Marripudi Primary Health Centre in Prakasam district at 5.58 p.m. on November 4. A baby girl weighing 2.5 kg was born, and both the mother and child were reported to be healthy. Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu said medical officers, ANMs and ASHA workers coordinated the identification and advance shifting of pregnant women and ensured the provision of medical services in cyclone-affected areas. Updated - November 06, 2026 09:03 pm IST - JAGTIAL A 10-month-old baby allegedly died of electrocution after coming into contact with an electronic weighing machine that was plugged into a power socket at her home in Rajarampalli village of Endapalli mandal in Jagtial district on Friday. The deceased was identified as Adya, daughter of Tirupathi, a scrap vendor from the village. According to sources, she was playing near the portable weighing machine when she accidentally touched it while it was connected to the power supply for charging. She suffered an electric shock and fell unconscious. Her father, Tirupathi, also received a mild electric shock while attempting to rescue her, sources said. The baby died while being shifted to a hospital in Dharmaram. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway. Of the total applications received, 175 were from Zone 4, 133 from Zone 5 and 107 from Zone 6, according to an MCC press release. Zones 7, 8 and 9 will be covered on November 7 and e-Aasthi certificates will be issued to eligible applicants on November 18 at the MCC office. The special drive aims to eliminate the involvement of middlemen in obtaining e-Aasthi certificates. Property owners should make use of this opportunity, the press release said. Manipal Group Hospital offered free health check-ups to participants, particularly senior citizens, during the drive.
