Actor Vatsala Rajagopal, best known for her roles in films such as Roja, Sathi Leelavathi, Rhythm, Julie Ganapathi, and countless other films, passed away in Chennai on Friday, October 30, 2026. She was 93.

According to reports, Vatsala passed away due to age-related ailments. Her mortal remains have been kept at her residence in Pallavaram for visitors to pay their homage.

Vatsala, who hails from Trivandrum, started as a theatre performer in the 1970s as part of the theatre group Rasika Ranga. In an interview with The Hindu in 2004 (when she was awarded the Nataka Choodamani of the Krishna Gana Sabha), Vatsala recounted how she got her big break. After moving to Madras in 1953, Vatsala joined the AG’s office, where her colleague K. Balachander (the late acclaimed filmmaker) would offer her roles in his plays and serials.

“It all happened by chance. But it is from my mother Ambujam Krishnaswamy, a brilliant student in her days, that I inherited my histrionic talent,” said Vatsala.

The actor then made her feature film debut in Mani Ratnam’s 1992 hit, Roja. In the film, Vatsala played the female lead Madhoo’s grandmother.

After Roja, the actor went on to act in several films such as Sathi Leelavathi, Rhythm, Julie Ganapathi, Pattiyal, Dhaam Dhoom, and, most recently, Kalyana Samayal Saadham.

As a stage actor, Vatsala’s career spanned 25 years and nearly 450 performances. Interestingly, Vatsala also found a new audience through daily soaps. She appeared in many popular shows such as Chithi, Vasantham, and Mundhanai Mudichu.

“TV pays much better than the stage, which is why many actresses prefer to act in serials. In fact, you spend more than you earn when you act in a play,” Vatsala said in the interview.

The news about the actor’s death has come as a shock to her fans. Vatsala Rajagopal’s final rites will be held at the Chrompet burial ground this evening.
