The cyclonic storm brewing over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said. It is likely to be the second highest in terms of intensity. Last year’s Montha was classified as a ‘severe cyclonic storm’.

The maximum sustained wind speed associated with a very severe cyclonic storm is likely to be between 118 km per hour and 221 km per hour. The severe cyclonic storm will make landfall between the northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha coasts on the morning of October 28.

The Odisha Government on Saturday (October 24, 2026) activated its disaster response and mitigation machinery. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reviewed the State’s preparedness and directed officials to prioritise public safety, evacuation and emergency response, stressing a zero-casualty objective.

Delhi’s temperature dropped to 17°C after overnight rain and thunderstorms, the weather office said. The city received 4.4 mm of rainfall between 8.30 p.m. on Saturday and 8.30 a.m. on Sunday, against a low of 18.3°C the day before. The IMD said more rain with thunderstorms is expected today, with a maximum of 31°C.

Air quality was ‘moderate’ at 9 a.m., with an AQI of 167; 11 of 54 stations were in the ‘poor’ category, highest at IIT Delhi (245).

As heavy rains continued to lash parts of Keralam, the IMD on Sunday (October 25, 2026) issued an orange alert in five districts of the State for three hours in the morning.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam districts for three hours from 8 am.

Besides that, it also predicted strong winds at speeds of 40-50 kilometres per hour in various parts of the state.

An orange alert means very heavy rain of 11 cm to 20 cm.

Kovai Courtallam waterfall in Coimbatore district remains closed to visitors on Sunday, October 25, due to heavy water inflow.

Jharkhand is likely to receive rainfall on October 28 and 29 as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is set to intensify into a cyclonic storm, an official said on Saturday (October 24, 2026).

Isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and winds gusting up to 50 kmph are expected at several places during the two days.

“The low-pressure area over east-central and adjoining south-east Bay of Bengal became a well-marked low-pressure area and lay over east-central Bay of Bengal at 5.30 a.m. on Saturday (October 24, 2026). It is most likely to persist over the same region and intensify into a depression on Saturday (October 24, 2026),” Ranchi Meteorological Centre Director Baburaj P. P. said.

The weather system is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify further into a deep depression on October 25, and a cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal by October 26 morning, he said.

President Droupadi Murmu’s scheduled two-day visit to Odisha from October 28 has been postponed in the wake of a possible cyclonic storm in the State’s coastal areas next week, officials said.

“Due to unfavourable weather forecasts and safety precautions, the President’s tour has been postponed,” an official at the Chief Secretary’s office said.

President Murmu’s Odisha visit is postponed due to an approaching cyclonic storm, with new Mayurbhanj dates rescheduled to November 4-5.

A depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm and cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, with wind speeds of 115–125 kmph.

Farmers in Chittoor and Annamayya regions breathed a sigh of relief following the recent downpours, which finally ended a long dry spell in the area. The showers have significantly increased soil moisture levels, breathing life into their plans for the upcoming rabi season.

However, that optimism is tempered by anxiety due to a brewing system in the Bay of Bengal, leaving farmers worried about potential crop destruction just as things were starting to look up.
