A high-level BJP Mahila Morcha delegation on Wednesday (October 14, 2026) met National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar and submitted a memorandum seeking action in the alleged sexual harassment case involving Congress MP and former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam.
The delegation was led by BJP national vice-president and Mahila Morcha in-charge Daggubati Purandeswari and BJP Mahila Morcha national president Roop Kumari Chaudhary. The memorandum referred to complaints filed by 11 female students against Mr. Akoijam and his subsequent dismissal by the university following an internal inquiry.
After the meeting, Ms. Chaudhary said the delegation had urged the NCW Chairperson to take cognisance of the matter. She questioned the Congress party’s “silence” on the issue and called for action against the MP.
“The brave girls who brought this matter to light are still studying in the same institution. Therefore, it is essential to ensure their safety and protection, and that they do not face any harm in the future. Given that he is a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, the Congress should have immediately expelled Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from the party as per the rules,” she said. The delegation also sought a reference to the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee.
