The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has advised residents in several parts of Mumbai, Thane and Bhiwandi to boil and filter drinking water for the next seven days, warning of a possible impact on water quality following the recommissioning of a repaired reservoir at the Pise-Panjrapur water supply complex.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday (October 27, 2026), repair work on Compartment No. 2 of the Yewai Master Balancing Reservoir has been completed, and the compartment is scheduled to be brought back into operation on Wednesday (October 28).

The BMC said the process could affect the quality of water supplied to parts of the island city, eastern suburbs and areas of Thane and Bhiwandi that receive water through its distribution network.

As a precautionary measure, the civic body has urged residents in the affected areas to boil and filter drinking water for seven days.

In the island city, the advisory covers the Naval Dockyard and Mumbai Port Trust areas in A Ward, along with the entirety of B Ward, E Ward, F South Ward and F North Ward.

In the eastern suburbs, the affected areas include Mulund East and West (T Ward); Bhandup, Nahur, Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli East (S Ward); Vikhroli and Ghatkopar (N Ward); and Kurla East (L Ward). The advisory also applies to the entirety of M East and M West wards.

Residents of areas in Thane and Bhiwandi municipal limits that receive water supplied by the BMC have also been advised to take similar precautions.

The civic administration has not reported confirmed contamination of the water supply but said the advisory was being issued as a preventive measure due to the possibility of changes in water quality during the reservoir’s recommissioning.

The BMC has appealed to residents to follow the precautionary instructions and cooperate with the administration during the seven-day period.
