Heavy rains triggered by Cyclone Murasu wreaked havoc in Aswaraopet, Dammapeta and several other mandals of Bhadradri Kothagudem district on Wednesday, inundating vast stretches of agricultural land and disrupting vehicular movement on several roads.

According to sources, the temporary ring bund of the Peddavagu medium irrigation project in Aswaraopet mandal reportedly suffered a breach, resulting in the inundation of agricultural fields in nearby villages.

Ponds and streams across the mandal swelled following overnight heavy downpour, causing waterlogging in low-lying areas of Aswaraopet, Naramvarigudem and other places.

Nemalipeta colony in Dammapeta was also inundated with rainwater, causing severe inconvenience to residents.

Vehicular movement on the Palvancha-Dammapeta road came to a standstill after a diversion road near Rajupeta in Mulakalapalli mandal was washed away by floodwaters on Wednesday morning.

Standing paddy and cotton crops, besides harvested produce were reportedly damaged by the heavy rains across several parts of the erstwhile undivided Khammam district, dealing a blow to farmers.

Local holidays were declared for schools in some mandals on Wednesday in view of the heavy rainfall triggered by Cyclone Murasu.
