Annamalai, who has started the ‘We The Leaders’ movement, on Monday said that Tamil Nadu’s GST collection performance over the past six months raised serious questions about the State’s economy, the government’s fiscal priorities, and the incumbent TVK government’s ability to generate sustainable revenue. “The only relief is that GST revenues finally showed signs of growth in October, though it was still in single digits,” he said. “What makes the single-digit growth, following several months of degrowth, even more concerning is that the recovery appears far from adequate. This comes despite the festive season in Tamil Nadu, extended school holidays, and a significant increase in tourist inflows and associated economic activity,” Mr. Annamalai said. The TVK government needed to take measures to augment the State’s GST revenues, starting with monitoring the Government’s capital expenditure across all departments, he said. “There is a general feeling that capital expenditure across many State departments has slowed over the past six months. Published - November 03, 2026 12:13 am IST - Chennai Saint-Gobain India and IIT-Madras is collaborating to set up two research laboratories focussing on innovation in sustainable construction materials and digital technologies for the built environment. The collaboration, supported through a grant of ₹3.8 crore over a three-year period, will help set up Digital Real-Time Sensing Technologies for Infrastructure (DRSTI) and Concrete Admixture Research for Engineering Next-gen Construction (CAREN) laboratories at the Centre of Excellence on Technologies for Low-carbon and Lean Construction in IIT-Madras. The labs will aim to address challenges facing the construction sector, including productivity, material efficiency, structural durability, and digital transformation, a press release stated. The CAREN lab will investigate how chemical admixtures interact with alternative cementitious materials, including industrial by-products and supplementary materials that can partially replace Portland cement. The DRSTI lab will develop intelligent solutions for monitoring construction progress, assessing quality, improving productivity, and evaluating building performance, the release added.
