Former Keralam DGP Tomin Thachankary has sought permission from the Kerala High Court to travel abroad and rejoin his employment in the United Arab Emirates.

Justice A. Badharudeen granted time for the State to file its objection to Thachankary’s plea seeking modification of his bail condition stating that he should not leave India without prior permission from the Court.

Mr. Thachankary had been convicted by the Special Judge (Vigilance), Kottayam, under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for four years, a fine of ₹30.84 lakh, with additional rigorous imprisonment for two months on default of fine. On appeal against the conviction, the High Court had suspended his sentence and released him on bail, imposing conditions, including on travelling abroad.

Thachankary informed the Court that he had been employed in the UAE for the past three years and was presently working as Operations Manager at Bhima Jewellers, Sharjah, and was a partner in a firm named Pulla Reddy Information Technology Consultants, based in Dubai.

The petitioner informed the Court that he had been unable to attend his office for more than a month and if he did not join soon, he would lose his employment, which would seriously impact his livelihood.

The matter will be considered again on November 2.
