The green water tanker service, to provide water treated at Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) for non-potable purposes, would be launched by Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) on Sunday (November 1). This was one of the measures to be rolled out towards conservation of the natural resources amid potential shortage of the drinking water in urban parts of Telangana under the impact of El Nino.

Under the first phase, the treated water from 11 STPs would be supplied through 21 green tankers. Altogether, 100 tankers were registered. The first priority would be given to government departments, parks and for landscaping. It would also be supplied for works at construction sites and industries, said the Board’s Managing Director Ashok Reddy.

Special officers were appointed to monitor water quality, the activities at filling points, tankers allotment and the supply. Directions were issued to paint the tankers green in colour with the caution ‘STP TREATED WATER – NOT FOR DRINKING’ clearly displayed.
