Tribal leader and social activist Nisha Kumari Bhagat on Friday (November 6, 2026) allegedly died by suicide in Jharkhand’s Ranchi shortly after going live on Facebook
In the live broadcast which last for 10 minutes, she accused Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s government, the police, and certain individuals associated with land mafia of allegedly harassing her. Targeting the State government, she said that she is now paying the price for bringing the government’s shortcomings to the public domain and exposing them.
The incident took place under Pithoria Police station area on Friday afternoon (November 6, 2026). She also allegedly called up Pithoria PS SHO during the live.
Bhagat also claimed she was falsely being called a broker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She described her father as a Jharkhand activist and remembered her mother. Speaking about land brokers, Bhagat asserted that she was fighting for the rights of her community.
Upon receiving information, a police team rushed to Bhagat’s residence and took her to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS). A team of doctors in the emergency department examined Bhagat but found her to be brought dead, RIMS Director Dr. B.K. Sinha said.
Nisha Bhagat, originally from Gumla district, belonged to the Oraon tribal community. She had also unsuccessfully contested the Assembly election from Gumla seat in 2024 on a Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) ticket.
She left JLKM after the election and was not associated with any political party. She was also the appointed as Central Women President of the Central Sarna Committee, dedicating her life for the preservation of Santhali culture and tradition.
Following her death, Leader of Opposition in Jharkhand Legislative Assembly Babulal Marandi slammed the Hemant Soren government over the incident. “Information has been received about the suicide of young leader Nisha Bhagat, who fought for the rights of tribal society and was a vocal voice of the community. She held Chief Minister Hemant Soren, the Pitthoriya police station in-charge, and Ajay Tirkey (converted Christian leader who works for missionary) responsible for this,” Mr. Marandi alleged.
“At the behest of the Chief Minister, some brokers are attempting to seize tribal lands. The game of land grabbing is underway in every police station and block of the state. How long will the tribal society continue to be harassed on its own land?” he added.
The BJP leader also pointed out that nothing can be more shameful and unfortunate than a young woman who raised her voice for the rights of tribals being harassed to such an extent that she takes her own life. “Chief Minister Hemant Soren should immediately resign from his post. Those whom Nisha Bhagat held responsible for her suicide should be immediately arrested, and the entire matter should be impartially investigated with strict action taken against the guilty,” Mr. Marandi said.
After visiting the hospital, M. Marandi demanded a CBI investigation.
