Kannan C.S. Warrier, Director of the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KSCSTE-KFRI), has been honoured with the International Iconic Scientist Award by Scientific Laurels, a research recognition and academic support platform registered under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India, in recognition of his distinguished contributions to forestry science, forest genetics, tree improvement, biodiversity conservation and sustainable forest management.
With more than three decades of research experience, Dr. Warrier has made pioneering contributions to clonal forestry and improving forest genetic resources. His development of three high-yielding, salt-tolerant clones of Casuarina equisetifolia has enabled the productive use of degraded sodic soils, creating opportunities for farm forestry, strengthening the livelihoods of small and marginal farmers, and providing sustainable wood resources for pulp, paper, and other industries.
His identification of 139 superior, crook-free Plus Trees of Thespesia populnea (Poovarasu) and 155 of Haldina cordifolia (Kadambu) has established valuable genetic resources for quality timber production. He has also developed cost-effective propagation techniques and advanced innovations in clonal seed orchards and digital forestry analytics, including a patented method for estimating tree mean diameter using digital images.
Dr. Warrier’s contributions to biodiversity conservation include documenting 1,128 sacred groves in Alappuzha district and highlighting their rich botanical diversity, comparable to that of Silent Valley. He has also devoted more than two decades to conserving and restoring his ancestral sacred grove at Haripad. His broader research includes mangrove conservation, forest landscape restoration, river rejuvenation, and sustainable forest resource management.
Dr. Warrier has published 327 scientific papers and contributed to national forestry assessments, policy initiatives, and international research collaborations. A renowned musician, he has composed several environmental anthems for the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Keralam Forest department, and performed ‘Music from Wood’ for the United Nations FAO’s International Day of Forests Celebrations in 2022.
