CGTCON 2026 aims to strengthen collaborations between clinicians, scientists, industry partners, and regulatory stakeholders
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) discussed priorities for strengthening solid waste management and environmental health systems in Chennai under the CLEAR (Clean Land, Equitable Air and Resilience) project. A meeting chaired by GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran at Ripon Buildings on Wednesday focused on the Corporation’s priorities for reducing solid waste and air pollution over the next two years, implementation challenges across zones, lessons from waste audits and field inspections, and wards and zones to be prioritised for pilot projects. Training and capacity-building needs of conservancy workers, engineers, and field staff were also discussed. The CLEAR project, led by MSSRF in collaboration with IIT-Madras, Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research and the GCC, examines the links between solid waste management, air pollution, climate-related risks, and public health. Participants visited the GCC’s Integrated Command and Control Centre, where officials explained how solid waste management operations and air-quality information are monitored.
Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital and Dr. Agarwals Institute of Optometry (DAIO) organised an innovative and interactive eye health awareness campaign on Wednesday, See What They See, a day ahead of World Sight Day. As part of the initiative, undergraduate students pursuing optometry at the institute designed specially curated simulation glasses mimicking the visual impact of different conditions including cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and refractive errors at four locations. More than 1,400 individuals wore these glasses and experienced how everyday vision can be affected by these conditions, said a press release. Highlighting the importance of proactive eye care, Karpagam, Dean, DAIO, said, raising awareness about silent eye diseases is crucial to motivate people to get annual examinations. Early detection is the primary defense in controlling preventable and avoidable blindness. If untreated, these eye conditions can affect independence, productivity and quality of life and, in many cases, can lead to avoidable vision loss.
