Mamata-Trinamool leaders assaulted; party accuses BJP of attack

The Mamata Trinamool Congress party has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attacking its leaders and workers, including former MLA and IPS officer Humayun Kabir,on Tuesday (September 22, 2026) night.

“DEATH OF DEMOCRACY IN BENGAL. Brutally assaulting opposition leaders have become the #NewNormal under @BJP4Bengal,” the party wrote on their social media and shared graphic photos of Mr. Kabir. In the picture the former MLA is seen injured and blood laden.

The Mamata-Trinamool claimed that their women workers were manhandled and assaulted by BJP workers during the alleged attack that took place in Kolkata’s Mukundapur on Tuesday (September 22, 2026) night.

“TMC IT Cell head Upasana Chowdhury was also among those who was assaulted, molested during the incident. Her clothes were torn,” Mamata-Trinamool said. They added that her car was vandalised and her home came under attack by the miscreants.

Top party leaders like general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, MP Sagarika Ghose, MP Dola Sen, MP Derek O’Brien, former MLA Samirul Islam, and several others condemned the attack and questioned the lack of police action on the issue.

“Let this be absolutely clear: POLITICAL DIFFERENCES CANNOT BECOME A LICENCE FOR POLITICAL VIOLENCE. There must be NO IMPUNITY, NO SELECTIVE SILENCE AND NO POLITICAL SHIELDING for anyone responsible for violence,” Mr. Banerjee wrote on his social media, condemning the attack.

No official statement has been made by the police on this matter.

The scuffle between the two parties and their workers had started over the alleged capturing of a party office, where slogans and counter slogans were raised, and eggs were thrown.

A delegation of Mamata-Trinamool leaders were headed to the East Jadavpur Police Station to file a deputation, during which the leaders were attacked.

“They [Mamata-Trinamool] are protecting miscreants and people will not react? Common people are now retaliating. Of course, they are bound to retaliate,” BJP MLA from Jadavpur Sarbari Mukherjee told a local media organisation.

West Bengal Congress also condemned the attack and said, “We do not see this incident as an attack on any party. We see it as a manifestation of the terrible attempt to establish one-party rule in Bengal. We are against the way the opposition voice is being suppressed today.”
