In the wake of an elephant running helter-skelter while carrying a howdah with Goddess Chamundeshwari’s idol during a Jamboo Savari procession in Shivamogga on Wednesday (October 21), Environment Minister Ramalinga Reddy has directed officials to ensure that there is a mandatory 20 to 30-day training period for elephants taking part in processions.

He said that Forest officials should ensure such training under the supervision of experienced elephant caretakers and Kavadis. He added that strict precautionary measures should be put in place and jumbos must be trained for various situations, which include handling large crowds and getting accustomed to the sound of musical instruments and firecrackers.

“Priority must be given to the physical and mental health of the elephants. Besides training them, crowd management and public safety must also be prioritised,” he added.

Mr. Reddy also spoke over the phone with the Deputy Commissioner, the Superintendent of Police, and Forest Department officials in Shimoga district. He has also sought a report on the incident.
