The Mumbai Police have issued two preventive orders restricting the sale of firecrackers across the city and prohibiting their use near petroleum installations in Chembur from November 3 to December 2.
The orders, issued on November 2 by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Akbar Pathan under the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951, aim to prevent public inconvenience and potential safety hazards.
Under the first order, the police have prohibited the bursting, throwing or launching of firecrackers and fireworks, including rockets, within 500 metres beyond the buffer zones of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) installations along Mahul Road in Chembur.
The restrictions cover the refinery premises of both companies, the Mahul Terminal area, their BDU plant areas and the area behind the 15-acre and 50-acre plots extending up to the Special Oil Refinery.
In a separate order, the police have prohibited the sale, possession for sale, display, carrying or offering of firecrackers and fireworks in public places across Mumbai without a valid licence issued by an authorised police officer or the state government.
The order seeks to prevent obstruction, inconvenience, danger and damage to the public arising from unregulated firecracker sales.
Both restrictions will remain in force until December 2, inclusive. The police have also directed that the orders be publicised by displaying copies at prominent public places and making announcements through loudspeakers or megaphones.
