One person died and six others were injured in a major fire at an Oil India Limited (OIL) installation in eastern Assam’s Dibrugarh district on Friday (November 6, 2026).

The exploration major said in a statement that the fire broke out around 9.05 a.m. at the indirect bath heater, isolated since November 4 for maintenance, in its intermediate tank farm at Tengakhat.

“Seven persons of the O&M (Operations and Maintenance) contractor sustained burn injuries in the fire incident. While six persons were rescued and taken for medical treatment, one person succumbed to the injuries at the incident site,” the statement read. Five of the six injured were admitted in the Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh, and one was taken to the OIL Hospital in Duliajan, the headquarters of the public sector undertaking.

“Our fire service department mobilised 11 fire tenders, and dry chemical powder to douse the fire after using the fixed fire fighting system at the installation,” an OIL spokesperson said.

She said the fire was extinguished at 12.30 p.m. and that the situation remained under control.

OIL has constituted an internal inquiry committee to investigate the incident, identify its immediate and underlying causes, assess the damage and suggest proactive measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
