Rajasthan has become the first State in northern India and the sixth in the country to complete digital identification of farmers by achieving the target of issuing 90.19 lakh identity cards set by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare. It will facilitate identification of eligible beneficiaries and make various services for farmers more targeted. Compared to the 76.54 lakh operational holdings recorded in the 2015-16 agriculture census, the digital identification of farmers has reached approximately 118% with the coordinated efforts of the Agriculture and Revenue Departments. State Agriculture Commissioner Naresh Kumar Goyal said here on Tuesday that the creation of a verified digital identity for farmers would help establish an interconnection of identity cards, land records and the crop registry. “This in turn will strengthen the delivery of services such as crop insurance, fertiliser distribution and procurement of farm produce at MSP,” Mr. Goyal said. In the future, this system would improve farmers’ access to agricultural credit, quality inputs, localised and need-based agricultural advisory services and market linkages, Mr. Goyal said. The initiative will also help strengthen micro-irrigation, water conservation, seeds and agricultural inputs, and the enrolments for the Prime Minister’s crop insurance scheme.

Eminent Tamil scholar V. Padhumanar and historian A.R. Venkatachalapathy, were honoured with the Mahavidwan Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai Award and the Dr. U.Ve. Swaminatha Iyer Award by the Dr. U.Ve. Swaminatha Iyer Library, Chennai, at a function held at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Chennai, on Tuesday. Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar presented the awards, citations and cash prizes in the presence of G. Viswanathan, the library chairman and chancellor, VIT, and G.V. Selvam, vice-president, VIT. Mr. Padhumanar was presented the award for his contribution to Tamil language, while Mr. Venkatachalapathy received the award in recognition of his contribution to Tamil history and research. Mr. Prabhakar also released a book on Nannool, with Mr. Selvam receiving the first copy. Mr. Viswanathan called upon political parties in Tamil Nadu to work together for the development of the State and the country, referring to the political systems of the Nordic countries — Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, adding that the political parties there demonstrated cooperation on issues concerning national development, a press release said.
