POCSO court sentences auto driver to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment in Kalaburagi

According to the investigation, Sheikh befriended the girl during her daily commute to college and obtained her phone number to stay in touch.

A District Special POCSO Court (Fast Track Special Court-1) in Kalaburagi sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹35,000 after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting a minor girl.

Judge S.L. Chavan delivered the verdict after hearing arguments from both sides and determining that the prosecution had proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt.

The convict, identified as Waseem Sheikh, an autorickshaw driver, came into contact with the victim when she was a second-year PU student. According to the investigation, Sheikh befriended the girl during her daily commute to college and obtained her phone number to stay in touch.

The prosecution stated that the accused lured the victim to his residence in Rahmat Nagar under the pretext of marriage and sexually assaulted her. Sheikh assaulted her again at his house on March 15, 2025. He provided her with medication and later verbally abused and threatened her when she blocked his phone number.

Following a complaint, a case was registered at the University Police Station. Police Inspector Susheel Kumar initiated the investigation, and Assistant Commissioner of Police (Sub-Urban Sub-Division) D.G. Rajanna submitted the charge sheet to the court.

Upon evaluating the evidence and witness statements, the court convicted Sheikh under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, sentencing him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine.

Additionally, the court directed the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to pay ₹5 lakh as compensation to the survivor.

Special Public Prosecutor Shanthaveer B. Thuppad represented the prosecution in the case.

Tiger suspected of killing man in BRT Reserve captured

A five-year-old tiger suspected of attacking and killing a 65-year-old man at Sanegala village in the Biligiri Ranganathaswamy Temple (BRT) Tiger Reserve in Chamarajanagar district was captured by the Forest Department in Tavarekatte Moole early on Saturday. The Deputy Conservator of Forests and Director of BRT Tiger Reserve, Chamarajanagar, said in a statement that the tiger was captured using a tranquiliser dart at around 6.15 a.m. on Saturday. On the orders of the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Bengaluru, the captured tiger was shifted to the Rehabilitation Centre at Koorgalli in Mysuru for further care and safety. Basavanna, 65, a resident of Badagalapura village in Chamarajanagar taluk, was killed in a wildlife attack while working in his field at Sanegala village on September 14. Following the incident, the Forest Department launched an operation on September 15 to track and capture the animal. The operation was conducted under the guidance of Chief Conservator of Forests, Chamarajanagar Circle, Malathi Priya, and Deputy Conservator of Forests and Director of BRT Tiger Reserve, Sripathi B.S. Cameras and cages were installed at and around the site of the incident and in the adjoining forest areas. The operation involved two dog squads of the BRT Tiger Reserve—Bhoomi and Bhanu—two trained elephants, Kanjan and Eshwara, two thermal drones, a departmental veterinary officer, skilled tribal trackers and 65 Forest Department officers and personnel. After sustained efforts, the tiger suspected of attacking Basavanna was captured at around 6.15 a.m. on Saturday using a tranquiliser dart. Meanwhile, Chamarajanagar district in-charge Minister C. Puttarangashetty had handed over a compensation cheque of ₹5 lakh from the BRT Tiger Fund to the family when he visited the deceased man’s house on September 15.

Child Development Project Officer trapped accepting ₹63,000 bribe in Jagtial

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Saturday caught a Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) in Jagtial district allegedly while accepting a bribe of ₹63,000 for not making adverse remarks during inspections of Anganwadi centres. The accused officer, Daroju Padma, CDPO, Metpally, was caught by the ACB’s Karimnagar unit while allegedly accepting the money from the complainant outside her office premises. According to the ACB, the officer had allegedly demanded ₹1,000 per month from each of 21 Anganwadi centres under the Metpally Urban Mandal for showing official favour. The amount for three months worked out to ₹63,000, at ₹3,000 from each centre. During the trap, the officer allegedly directly accepted ₹63,000 from the complainant. The tainted amount was recovered from her possession, the ACB said. The agency alleged that the officer had demanded and accepted the money in return for not recording adverse remarks while inspecting the Anganwadi centres, thereby misusing her official position. She is being arrested and produced before the Special Judge for SPE and ACB Cases, Karimnagar, for judicial remand. Further investigation is under way. The identity and other details of the complainant have been withheld for security reasons.

Bolarum arms theft accused had prior criminal cases before joining Army

Retired Army Havaldar U. Mallesh, accused in the Bolarum arms theft case, had two criminal cases registered against him before he was selected for the Army in 2010, a background check by investigators has revealed. A theft case was registered against Mallesh at Achampet police station in 2005. He was also named as an accused in a 2007 case involving the theft of gold jewellery and silver from a house under the Amrabad police station limits. Police are now investigating how Mallesh was recruited into the Army despite the earlier criminal record. Army officials are said to be separately inquiring into the circumstances surrounding his selection. Meanwhile, investigators have also found that Mallesh allegedly stole the arms and ammunition from the 20 Battalion, Madras Regiment, in Bolarum to get his senior officers into trouble and make them face disciplinary action over the missing cache. Mallesh is currently in 10-day police custody. Bolarum police took him into custody from Chanchalguda jail at 11 a.m. on September 22, and the custody period will conclude on October 1. “Further information about his involvement and possible accomplices will be revealed in due time,” an officer close to the investigation said. Mallesh was arrested on September 11 in connection with the theft of 12 firearms and more than 1,800 rounds of ammunition from the Madras Regiment premises. The entire stolen cache was subsequently recovered.
