P.P. Umer Musliyar Koyyode from Kannur has been chosen as the new general secretary of the Sunni scholars’ forum Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama. He has been serving as the treasurer of the organisation.
He was picked for the post at a ‘mushawara’ (executive committee) meeting of the Samastha held in Kozhikode on Wednesday (September 23, 2026). The post had fallen vacant after the demise of the incumbent K. Alikutty Musliyar in July. M.T. Abdulla Musliyar, joint secretary, had been temporarily holding the charge.
Syed Mohammed Jifri Muthukoya Thangal, Samastha president, told the media that Mr. Abdulla Musliyar would be the new treasurer of the organisation. V. Moosakoya Musliyar (Wayanad) and A.V. Abdurahman Musliyar (Kozhikode) would be vice-presidents. Panangangara Hyder Faizy (Malappuram) would replace Mr. Abdulla Musliyar as joint secretary.
Meanwhile, Mr. Thangal said an eight-member consultative committee had been formed to deliberate on important matters related to the Samastha because the ‘mushawara’ meetings are held only once in two months. Apart from the president, general secretary, and the treasurer, the other members of the committee would be Mr. Abdurahman Musliyar, Bahauddeen Muhammed Nadwi, P.K. Hamsakutty Musliyar Adrissery, Vakkod Moideenkutty Musliyar, and P.M. Abdulsalam Baqavi.
The ‘fatwa’ committee of the organisation would be reconstituted to respond to important questions related to the Samastha. Mr. Thangal (chairman) Mr. Abdulla Musliyar (convener), Mr. Umer Musliyar, P.K. Moosakutty Hasrath, C.K. Abdurahman Faizy Aripra, and Abdul Gafoor Anwari would be its members.
On the critical remarks of Samastha secretary Mukkam Umer Faizy about the Indian Union Muslim League and the United Democratic Front government over the Waqf dispute, Mr. Thangal said the new committee would discuss them and take an appropriate decision. The committee would call all stakeholders, he added.
