Updated - October 19, 2026 01:33 am IST - HYDERABAD Several parts of Telangana received rainfall on Saturday (October 17), bringing relief after a prolonged dry spell that had contributed to falling groundwater levels across the State. While parts of Hyderabad also received rain, several central areas of the city remained dry amid cold, gusty winds. The rainfall comes after nearly two months of largely dry conditions and offers respite to areas facing water shortages following deficient rainfall during the southwest monsoon this year. According to data from Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), as of 9 p.m, Pochampally in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri recorded rainfall of 69.3 mm followed by 62.5 mm in Tupranpet (Yadadri Bhuvanagiri), 57.8 mm in Peddagopati (Khammam), 37.8 mm in Shamshabad (Rangareddy), 34.3 mm in Kongarakalan (Rangareddy), 30.5 mm in Thirumalgiri (Suryapet) and 23.3 mm in Maganoor (Narayanpet). Within Hyderabad, Nagole recorded the highest rainfall at 11 mm. Mettuguda received 3.8 mm, followed by Adibatla at 2.3 mm, Hayathnagar at 1.8 mm and Ghatkesar at 1.5 mm. Updated - October 19, 2026 01:17 am IST - KARIMNAGAR Special Chief Secretary (Services & HRM) and Special Officer for the erstwhile undivided Karimnagar district Benhur Mahesh Dutt Ekka has directed officials to prepare village-level action plans for the next eight months to mitigate the potential impact of El Nino conditions. The plans should prioritise drinking water needs and assess water availability, groundwater levels, power consumption, and cultivation of alternative crops, he said, emphasising the need for awareness campaigns to discourage paddy cultivation during the Yasangi (Rabi) season. He was chairing a review meeting with Collectors and officials of Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jagtial and Rajanna Sircilla districts at the Integrated District Offices Complex (IDOC) in Karimnagar on Saturday. Mr. Ekka stressed the need for coordinated efforts to anticipate challenges and take preventive measures. He asked officials to encourage farmers to cultivate millets, pulses, oil seeds, maize and other alternative crops to avoid potential crop losses, besides promoting water conservation. The Collectors of the four districts briefed the meeting on rainfall, water availability, groundwater levels and other related aspects in their respective districts, besides outlining the action plans being drawn up to address the potential challenges.
