The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released draft guidelines for the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in telecom networks and service delivery, seeking feedback from industry stakeholders by November 27, 2026. The proposed framework aims to bring greater clarity, predictability and accountability to the adoption of AI across the telecommunications sector, where the technology is increasingly being deployed in network operations and customer-facing services. The consultation follows the Centre's release of the India AI Governance Guidelines in February 2026, which set out a national framework for encouraging AI adoption while addressing the risks associated with the technology. Telecom's critical role drives sector-specific AI rules The Ministry of Communications said the telecom sector forms a key part of India's digital infrastructure, supporting public connectivity, essential government services, trade and commerce, and the functioning of critical information infrastructure. It also plays a crucial role in national security and emergency response, making responsible AI deployment particularly important in the sector. Live Events "At present, AI is increasingly being integrated into telecommunication networks and provision of telecommunication services," the Ministry said. TRAI has initiated the consultation to ensure that the national AI governance framework is implemented consistently across telecom networks and services. Draft framework builds on seven AI governance principles The India AI Governance Guidelines are based on seven guiding principles, or sutras: Trust is the Foundation, People First, Innovation over Restraint, Fairness & Equity, Accountability, Understandable by Design, and Safety, Resilience & Sustainability. "The guidelines are anchored in seven guiding sutras or principles — Trust is the Foundation, People First, Innovation over Restraint, Fairness & Equity, Accountability, Understandable by Design, and Safety, Resilience & Sustainability," the Ministry said. It added that "Part 4 of the guidelines provides practical guidance for industry actors and regulators to increase clarity, predictability and accountability in the ecosystem." The Ministry said the sector's importance extends beyond commercial and economic activity to the country's security framework. The draft consultation paper is available on TRAI's official website. Industry participants and other stakeholders can submit their written comments and suggestions by November 27, 2026. (With inputs from ANI) Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
