A section of the cadre of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) blew whistles, the party’s election symbol, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi was addressing an official function on the IIT-Madras campus on Sunday.

Seated in the last row, the cadre erupted in cheers and blew whistles whenever Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s name was mentioned. They continued the display even while Mr. Modi was speaking. They blew whistles and held placards and posters featuring Mr. Vijay’s photographs and slogans hailing him as the “Next PM”.

As their actions caused a disturbance, the police asked them to behave. The cadre calmed down briefly, but resumed their activities later.
