The coastal road connecting Koyilandy harbour with Kollam Angadi has become a reality with the completion of two small bridges across the Cheriyathodu and Koothavallythodu (canals). The road will provide fisherfolk from Kollam, Arayankavu, and Gurukulam beach with direct access to Koyilandy harbour without having to use the national highway.
The bridges were constructed at a cost of ₹1.16 crore using funds from the Harbour Engineering department. The project was executed under the supervision of the Harbour Engineering Sub-Division Office, Koyilandy. A concrete carriageway was laid in view of the coastline’s vulnerability to sea erosion and tidal ingress.
The coastal route runs from Kollam beach road through Kollam beach, Arayankavu, Koothavally, Gurukulam beach, Valiyakath Palli, and Mayan beach to Koyilandy harbour.
Officials said the road would benefit fishing communities in Kollam, Arayankavu, and Gurukulam beach by facilitating easier access to the harbour. It would also serve as an alternative route for small vehicles when traffic is disrupted between Kollam and Koyilandy, offering an additional travel option for people in the coastal belt.
From Koyilandy harbour, motorists can continue towards Kappad and Kattilapeedika along the coast. However, the entire coastal stretch beyond the harbour is yet to become fully motorable.
The road between the harbour and Ezhukudikkal has been renovated. The stretch from Ezhukudikkal to Kappad, however, remains in poor condition, with sections damaged by sea erosion, making travel difficult.
The project was implemented as part of the State government’s initiative to upgrade coastal roads.
