The White House said the changes would remove tariffs on certain products, including "plywood sheets, some paper products, certain machinery and refrigeration equipment". However, the administration will also introduce tariffs on other goods, including carpets, certain valves and waste products. The new measures will take effect on October 30. The United States and Canada have closely connected economies.
Trump and Rubio have both adopted a hard line towards Cuba's communist government. In May, the two renewed the possibility of US military intervention, with the threat gaining further significance after the Trump administration announced criminal charges against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro. Trump had floated a similar idea earlier this year but had not raised it publicly in recent months.
