CMC to organise cookery competition to mark World Diabetes Day

The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Christian Medical College (CMC) will organise a cookery competition between 3 p.m and 5 p.m at Darling Residency in Vellore town on September 26 (Saturday) to commemorate World Diabetes Day 2026.

According to a press release, the theme of the competition will be “Flavours of Our Heritage – Prepare a diabetes-friendly lunch from Tamil Nadu or Andhra Cuisine” as nutrition and diet play a crucial role in the prevention and management of diabetes and it is important to eat balanced portions of wholesome home-cooked meals, in a timely manner.

Entries can be submitted through an online portal (www.cmcendovellore.org/wdd24), the release said.

1,671 km of stormwater drains being desilted: Chennai Mayor

Greater Chennai Corporation Mayor R. Priya told the council that desilting of 1,671 km of stormwater drains was under way at an estimated cost of ₹22.46 crore, in response to a question from MDMK councillor P. Subramani (Ward 139) on monsoon preparedness. She said ₹10 crore had been allocated at ₹5 lakh per ward for monsoon precautionary works. Another ₹22 crore had been earmarked for patching and resurfacing damaged roads, while ₹26.53 crore had been proposed for hiring 150 100-horsepower pumps and 500 tractor-mounted pumps for low-lying areas. The Mayor said ₹4.65 crore had been allocated to engage temporary personnel to operate pumps and water tanks. A drone survey costing ₹15 lakh was also being undertaken to verify desilting works and ensure that removed silt and garbage were cleared. She added that mosquito-control workers had been deployed, adequate quantities of larvicides stocked and fogging carried out in vulnerable areas. Pamphlets on disease prevention during the rainy season would also be distributed, with health inspectors tasked with creating awareness.

Blood donation camp held in Raichur

More than 193 people donated blood at a camp organised in Raichur on Friday as part of the 64th birthday celebrations of Shilpa Medicare Managing Director Vishnukant Bhutada. The camp was organised jointly by Shilpa Medicare Ltd., Shilpa Foundation, Navodaya Medical College Hospital and Research Centre and Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) at a hall on the premises of Shilpa Pharma Lifesciences Ltd. Inaugurating the camp, Shilpa Pharma Lifesciences Director Sharath Reddy said blood donation was a crucial service, as it could help save another person’s life. He appealed to people to come forward and make blood donation a social responsibility. “Everyone should be a model to society by donating blood,” he said, adding that regular blood donation, subject to medical eligibility, could also contribute to maintaining good health. Sharath Reddy and Chief Operating Officer Manicka Vasagan appreciated the contribution of Vishnukant Bhutada to the development of health, education, environmental protection, and sports through the Shilpa Foundation and his social service initiatives in Raichur. A.S. Ananda, Vice-Principal; Ashraf, medical officer at Navodaya Medical College; and Ahmad Hussain of the RIMS blood bank, along with other doctors, officials, Shilpa Medicare employees and blood bank staff, were present.
