The singer, whose real name is Jason Bradley DeFord, joined Nashville officials in August 2024 to break ground on a new youth campus. Planned across 14 acres, the development aims to replace outdated juvenile justice facilities with a more supportive environment for children and families. For Jelly Roll, the project is particularly personal, transforming a difficult chapter of his life into an opportunity to help others. According to PEOPLE, the musician spent several years at the Davidson County Juvenile Justice Centre during his adolescence, celebrating his 14th, 15th and 16th birthdays there. At 17, he was charged as an adult and left the juvenile facility behind.His return on August 8, 2024, marked a striking change in circumstances. Instead of arriving as a teenager facing the justice system, he attended the groundbreaking ceremony as a successful musician and advocate for young people.The News International reported that Jelly Roll wanted the new development to offer children an experience different from the one he remembered. He emphasised the importance of creating surroundings where young people feel supported rather than simply confined. His own journey from incarceration to musical success has become an important part of his efforts to encourage young people to believe in the possibility of change. Why Nashville is replacing its existing juvenile justice centre The new Nashville Youth Campus for Empowerment, known as NYCE, is being developed to address the limitations of the city's existing juvenile justice infrastructure.According to the Juvenile Court Clerk of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County, the current Juvenile Justice Centre at 100 Woodland Street opened in 1994. As the city's juvenile justice system expanded, additional courtrooms and judicial officers placed increasing pressure on the available space.The expansion forced other programmes and agencies to relocate to accommodate courtroom requirements. The facility also faced infrastructure difficulties, including plumbing problems between 2019 and 2020.A master planning process identified the need for significantly more space to meet juvenile justice requirements through 2035. A 2017 plan recommended a campus-style development that could accommodate court operations and additional services without the limitations of the existing building.The proposed replacement is intended to improve both the physical environment and the way young people and their families experience the justice system. What will be provided at the 14-acre Nashville youth campus The NYCE Campus is planned for Brick Church Pike on a 14-acre site formerly occupied by the Al Menah Shrine Temple. The location was selected for its accessibility, nearby community organisations, public transport connections and space for outdoor areas.The campus will house Davidson County Juvenile Court alongside a pre-trial housing facility for young people involved in the justice system. It is also expected to include a 24-hour assessment centre for children experiencing crises.Additional facilities will provide space for court hearings, private meetings and conversations involving families, lawyers, community organisations and court officials. A safe exchange facility is planned to support therapeutic visits between children and their parents or caregivers.Green spaces and courtyards are also part of the design, helping create a calmer environment for children and families dealing with difficult circumstances. Jelly Roll is using music to give young people another chance Jelly Roll's support for Nashville's youth extends beyond the new campus. His earlier contribution to the juvenile detention centre helped establish a recording studio for young people interested in music.PEOPLE reported that the studio, donated by the singer, opened in May 2024. The initiative was inspired by his own experience of discovering music during incarceration.For Jelly Roll, songwriting and recording became important outlets during difficult periods of his life. The studio was intended to give young people opportunities to explore their creativity and develop their musical interests while in detention. His involvement in the campus project builds on the same belief that access to constructive activities and support can make a difference in young people's lives.The Nashville Youth Campus for Empowerment is expected to become a major investment in the city's juvenile justice system.
