Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi sought the naming of the proposed Mamnoor Airport in Warangal after freedom fighter from Hyderabad State, Moulvi Syed Alauddin.
In a letter to Chief Minister A. Revanth, Mr. Owaisi said the airport, which was built in the 1930s during the reign of the Nizam of Hyderabad, was now being revived and developed to strengthen air connectivity to the region. He said the airport was constructed to facilitate the paper industry and industries such as Azam Jahi Mills in Warangal.
While on the one hand Mr Owaisi welcomed Mr Reddy inviting suggestions for a suitable name for the airport, he proposed Moulvi Syed Alauddin Airport, honouring of the freedom fighter who was associated with Hyderabad’s resistance to British rule during the First War of Independence in 1857.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief stated that Moulvi Syed Alauddin, along with Turrebaz Khan, led the resistance against the British Residency in Hyderabad in July 1857. Moulvi Syed Alauddin was subsequently captured and imprisoned in the Cellular Jail, he said.
“His contribution represents an important chapter in the history of Hyderabad and the freedom struggle in south India,” Mr Owaisi said, adding that naming the airport after him would be a tribute to his courage and sacrifice and help ensure that the legacy of the “largely unsung freedom fighter” was remembered by future generations.
