A surprise check at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison led to the recovery of a keypad mobile phone and three SIM cards from two convicted prisoners, while prison officials had recovered ₹8,500 in cash during a separate search the previous day.

According to the complaint filed by B.M. Kotresh, Superintendent, Central Prison, Parappana Agrahara, prison officials conducted a surprise inspection of Tower-2, C-Barrack between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on September 29. During the search of Room No. 4, officials found a keypad mobile phone without a SIM card in the bag of convict prisoner Malatesh.

During the inspection of Room No. 5, officials found three SIM cards concealed inside a cap kept on the bed of convict prisoner Mohammed Nawaz.

The prison authorities have sought registration of a case against those who allegedly smuggled the prohibited items into the prison, those who assisted them, and those who used the items inside the prison under Section 42 of the Karnataka Prisons Act, 1963, and other relevant provisions.

In a separate incident, prison officials recovered ₹8,500 in cash during a surprise inspection of the kitchen block on September 28. The search was conducted between 11 a.m. and 1.15 p.m. by Jailor Amar S.H., S.M. Belagavi, and the inspection team. The cash was found in a bag kept in a toilet in Room No. 7 of the kitchen section.

The prison authorities have also sought legal action to ascertain how the cash was brought inside the prison, who assisted in doing so, and whether it was used by inmates or others in violation of prison rules.
