The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday (November 3, 2026) announced that theatres across the State could now screen newly released Tamil films for up to six shows a day, from 6 a.m. to 2.30 a.m. the following day, for one week from the date of release.
According to an official release, based on the directions of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, would be amended suitably. The State government has also permitted six shows a day on local festival days, public holidays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The decision was taken following representations from various film producers’ associations to the State government. After the TVK-led government assumed office, permission had been granted to screen newly released Tamil films for five shows a day for seven days from the date of release. Five shows a day were also permitted on local festival days, public holidays, Saturdays and Sundays.
