A 48-year-old woman with a disability died after being trapped in a fire that broke out at her apartment in Periyar Nagar, Korattur, in the early hours of Sunday (November 1, 2026). Her husband and son escaped with burn injuries.
The deceased has been identified as Akila, 48. Police said the incident occurred while the family of three was asleep.
An air-conditioner and a refrigerator, among other electrical appliances, reportedly exploded as the fire spread rapidly through the house. A suspected electrical short circuit is believed to have triggered the blaze.
The woman’s husband, Ramani, 55, and their son, Karthik, 25, managed to escape from the house despite suffering burn injuries. However, Akhila, who had a disability, could not get out and was trapped inside. She died in the fire.
On receiving information, personnel from the Korattur police and Fire and Rescue Services rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations with the help of local residents. Ramani and Karthik were rescued and taken to a hospital for treatment.
The Rajamangalam Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
